SPORTS YOGA AND THE ELITE ATHLETE

Could athletes benefit from practicing yoga? Is yoga the key to helping elite athletes perform to their highest potential? Is there a relationship between yoga and the cultivation of optimal mental and physical states?

It is becoming increasing clear that there is a strong correlation between well-being and performance. Sport and exercise psychologists continually examine, research, and implement strategies to help athletes reach their full athletic potential.

Playing sports is complex and players have to consistently manage all of the variables going on during a game, including executing plays, predicting other players’ next moves, and coping with distractions. Afflictions of the mind, such as remaining focused, competitive anxiety, and stress management are all common issues experienced by athletes. This adds up to a cognitively overwhelming load on the player’s mind.

Recommended psychological interventions include the use of mental imagery, positive self-talk, visualization of success, concentration skills, and deep breathing exercises.

With a growing body of research supporting the mental health benefits of practicing yoga, sports psychologists are incorporating this training into their work with athletes. Yoga combines stretching and strengthening exercises with deep breathing and meditation. Studies show this total mind-body practice offers many physical, as well as mental, health benefits.

I coach high school football and think there may be a place for yoga in our training. Thanks for organizing this.

Yoga poses stretch your muscles and increase your range of motion.
Very good blog.

It takes a lot of strength to hold your body in a balanced pose as a baseball pitcher. I am going to try yoga to help me with this.
